How to stop hitting it fat
Quick answer: To stop hitting it fat, move the low point of your swing in front of the ball by checking where the club hits the ground, adjusting ball position, setting more weight on the lead side, shifting before you swing down, and letting your hands lead the clubhead at impact.
How to stop hitting it fat: move the low point of the swing in front of the ball. A fat shot is the club hitting the ground first, and the turf takes the speed.
12 Strike
The situation
A fat shot takes a thump of ground first, and the ball comes up short, sometimes well short. The bottom of the swing arrived too early. Common causes include the weight staying on the trail foot, the ball too far forward for the club, and the wrists throwing the clubhead from the top.
If the leading edge catches the middle of the ball and it shoots off low, that is the other side of the same problem. That is the thin shot.
A check you can do
Draw a line in the grass, or lay a towel edge on a mat, and put the ball just in front of it, toward the target. Make ten half swings with an iron. Look at where the club first touched the ground. If the mark starts behind the line, the low point is behind the ball. A useful iron strike touches the ground at the ball or just after it.
The fix
- 01Check the ball is not too far forward For a mid-iron the ball sits at center, or up to about one ball-width forward, not up by the lead toe. A ball that far forward is already in front of the low point before you swing. The landmarks are on ball position.
- 02Set a little more weight on the lead side At address, lean a touch of weight into the lead foot for an iron. Not a lunge. The low point follows the weight, and you want it at the ball or just past it.
- 03Shift before you swing down The first move down is the weight going to the lead foot. If you stay on the trail foot, the club bottoms out behind the ball wherever the ball is.
- 04Let the hands lead the clubhead Throwing the clubhead from the top lets it reach the ground early. Keep the hands ahead of the clubhead into the ball, with the shaft leaning slightly toward the target at impact.
- 05Ten balls off the line Repeat the line check at half speed. The win is a mark that starts at the ball or in front of the line, not a harder hit. Around the green, the same fault is on the chip.
Fat-shot towel drill
Lay a towel about four inches behind the ball. Hit half-speed shots without touching it. Touching the towel means the low point is still behind the ball.
Fat shots with the driver?
You cannot really hit a teed driver fat, but you can hit the ground behind the tee and pop the ball up. That can come from a steep swing or a ball too far back. Move the ball opposite the lead heel and feel a shallower, sweeping swing.
Common questions
What is the difference between a fat shot and a thin shot?
A fat shot occurs when the club hits the ground before the ball, while a thin shot happens when the leading edge strikes the ball around its middle. Both are caused by the low point of the swing being in the wrong place.
Can a fat shot happen with a driver?
Not in the usual sense, but you can still strike the ground behind the tee. A fat driver shot means hitting the ground behind the ball, which can pop the ball up. This can come from a steep swing or a ball position that's too far back.
How does ball position affect a fat shot?
If the ball is too far forward in your stance, the low point of the swing will be behind the ball, increasing the chance of a fat shot. Adjusting the ball position to a more neutral spot can help.
What role does weight shift play in a fat shot?
Keeping too much weight on the trail foot delays the weight shift, causing the club to bottom out behind the ball. Shifting weight to the lead side helps the low point move in front of the ball.
