The grip

Every shot starts in the hands. If the face is a surprise, change the hold before you change the swing.

The situation

The club feels like a stranger, the ball peels to the right, or the shaft twists by the time you finish. Those are grip problems until a check says otherwise. A slice often begins in a weak hold. A shank often begins in a tight one.

A check you can do

Hold the club in front of you. The lead hand is the one closer to the target. If you cannot point to it without thinking, stop and open a note below before you hit another ball. Then look at the lead-hand knuckles. One or none usually means the face will stay open. Two is a workable place to start.
