2 First round
Your first round
The job is to finish the round. It is not to look like you have played for years.

The situation
A first round is on the calendar and you have almost no swings behind you. The ways it goes badly are ordinary: hunting for a ball, changing clubs every shot, and standing over the ball while the group waits.
You do not need a full set in your hands. You need one club you can meet the ball with, a second idea for the tee, and a plan for when you are close to the green.
A check you can do
Hit ten balls with a 7-iron or a hybrid, on grass you are allowed to use or on a practice mat. If you meet the ball on seven of them, that club is your round club. If you do not, spend the time you have on that one club. Do not spend it on the driver.
The fix
- 01Pack a small bag Take balls you can see against grass, a handful of tees, and something to mark a score. Leave the extra gadgets at home. If you are still choosing a first club, a used-clubs link may be added later. Nothing on this page is for sale.
- 02Trust the club that passed the check Tee off with a hybrid or a fairway wood if the driver failed the ten-ball check. Use the same mid club for shots from the grass until you are near the green. The driver can stay in the bag for the day. That is a choice, not a confession.
- 03Aim at a wide landing On the tee, pick the fat part of the short grass, not a flag. After the tee shot, aim the next one at a zone in front of the green. Save the flag for when you are already close.
- 04
- 05Keep the group moving Look for a lost ball only for a short, agreed moment, then continue with the group. Mark the score after you leave the green, not while people are waiting. Read first-round manners before you go, not during someone else's swing.
